“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” ~ Arthur C Clarke

As a sci-fi writer and a quantum fan, I do indeed love space and science, and I do believe science has evolved in some tremendous ways. However, I feel what the human race has done with technology is shameful and downright atrocious.

The truth is the clock was made to keep you in check, the computer to monitor your habits and the mobile phone to track your every location. Some may call me paranoid, some may call me anti-authority and others will say you live in a world of delusion.

I say just because you‘re unaware doesn’t mean they aren’t out to get you.

So yes, Huston we have a problem.

Those who are familiar with my Instagram, may remember my posts about mobile phone sourcing, technology leading to anti-social behaver and how we filter our photographs to hide the natural aging and scaring process of the human body.

To my utter dismay this planet, this reality, has become a virtual one. This is not a path I would have chosen for the human race if I was a politician, we are organic, the world is organic, what on earth inspired us to become machines?!

Everywhere I turn, I see eyes down and necks strained as we focus into our mobile phones. I remember a time not so long ago, if you wanted to communicate with me, email, text and even a phone call was out of the question. You would need to show up at my front door, or bump into me. Yes this irritated some, but then again it meant I knew who my true friends were.

Does the everyday layman know a computer with a webcam can be accessed by the government so they can spy on you? That google can monitor their location and sell their information onto companies?

Also do they know that phone calls are intercepted daily so the big corporations can sell stuff to them? Or that television, the media, the news is partly censored, and whoever spends the most money gets to advertise?

I think we can all agree that we dislike censorship, the thing is we have the ‘freedom of information act’ and yet we are only shown a percentage of data. However, worse still, we cannot even sh*t in privacy as hovering above we have x-ray drones and on the walls CCTV with extra zoom.

Where your mobile phone, computer and television comes from.

Congo, Africa.

UNICEF estimates that about 40,000 children work as miners in southern DRC, many of who extract materials such as cobalt, gold, copper and beryllium. Whether these children dig holes which are prone to collapse, or perform the simple task of sorting through dirt which entails inhaling toxic fumes, child labour is a human right violation.

Apple and Samsung prepared to be shamed, because every single technology company apart from ‘FairPhone’ gets their materials this way.

Inhaling cobalt dust causes hard metal lung disease, skin contact with cobalt causes dermatitis. Beryllium can make your skin turn permanently green and give you repository diseases. So why are these children made to work 12 hour days without COSH? Without gloves or masks to protect them?

Another shocking revelation, did you know there are roughly 120,000 child soldiers in Africa today, and yes they are mainly used to keep thieves away from the technology mines. This is the violent reality we live in, (no virtual screen for companies to hide behind here) if you buy any technology, it has come from a form of child abuse.

Technology is watching you, consumers our hands are covered in blood, we may not have committed the crime but we certainly bought it. I urge you, turn away from all technology advertisements, please think again before you upgrade. Don’t buy into this horror and help save lives, go ethical buy from FairPhone.

Landfills of Toxic Waste

We generate around 40 million tons of electronic waste every year, worldwide. That’s like throwing away 800 laptops every second. E-waste comprises of 70% of our overall toxic waste and only 12.5% of E-Waste is actually recycled, so 85% ends up in landfill and ruins beautiful exotic islands. Which are in time burned and those fumes release harmful toxins in the air, adding towards climate change.

Electronics contain lead which can damage our central nervous system and kidneys, so it’s not just the miners and producers who are at risk, we all are. The most common hazardous electronic items include LCD desktop monitors, LCD televisions, Plasma Televisions, TVs and computers with Cathode Ray Tubes.

And what about the ridiculous lengths people go to, to get a dangerous Selfie?

So apart from the apparent dangers to physical health, what about our mental health?

Do you show signs of social anxiety? Too shy to talk? Scared to leave the house? Paranoid about stretch marks? When you smile do you show wrinkles? Is everyone staring at your last season’s jeans? Tramp!

Your mother gave birth to a beautiful natural body, so relax, you are perfect just the way you are! Even Mr Steve Jobs himself didn’t let his children use an Ipad! What a hypocrite. Wake up today, go outside and keep technology to a minimum.

    1. Yes, second hand probably best solution if you really need one. I know my 6 year old phone will have to be replaced at some point.
